 note = {The main purpose of this study is to investigate the evolution and development of the patent medicine business in Nara, using the trademark registration database. First, we analysed the development of the Trademark System in Japan, and then investigated the  procedure for obtaining Class 1 registration, which includes chemical substances, medicines, and others. We also analysed the general history of pharmaceutical affairs in Nara from a historical perspective to Meiji and Taishō periods. The study also considers the development  of a trade association and various government regulatory policies. Finally, we investigated the Sankogan Co., Ltd., which is one of the oldest pharmaceutical companies in Nara, focusing on its trademark registration and response to infringement of trademark registration.  From this study, it is evident that the modern trademark system plays an important role in the development of the patent medicine business in Nara.},
